A new cancer center in Palm Beach Gardens is using radiation technology that Dr. Eugene Shieh says can better target breast tumors while limiting exposure to nearby healthy tissue. Tampa General Mass General Brigham Cancer Center opened in August 2026 and serves 40 to 50 patients a day, according to WPBF 25’s report.
The WPBF report ran during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which it described as a time to focus on evolving treatments and outcomes for patients. The facility offers adult radiation oncology services across diseases, including breast cancer, Shieh said. He is the center’s East Coast clinical medical director. During the report, he showed the TrueBeam radiotherapy system.
Palm Beach Gardens system monitors anatomy and breathing
Shieh called TrueBeam “the latest and greatest when it comes to cancer treatment.” He described it as having multiple layers of technology. He said it includes HyperSight, which lets the team see normal tissues and a patient’s anatomy while positioning them. The system also uses Vision RT to monitor breathing and support a breath hold, he said, helping the team avoid the heart. Related coverage on Meditech Wire also examines the role of vendors in remote patient monitoring services.
Shieh said breast radiation requires clinicians to consider the skin, lungs and heart, particularly for patients treated on the left breast. On earlier approaches, he said:
“In prior generations, to target the breast tissue where we need to get radiation dose, the surrounding normal tissue would get radiation dose unnecessarily,” Shieh said.
The report says the system allows providers to target affected areas more accurately and avoid healthy tissues. Shieh said the technology can help protect patients from long-term side effects and may shorten treatment duration. This use of technology in care connects with Meditech Wire’s coverage of patients communicating with medical devices.
Breast radiation strategies are changing
Shieh described the change in treatment schedules over recent years:
“A few years ago, we were treating most patients five to seven weeks. And now, a lot of patients get five days of treatment or a few weeks of treatment, more focused with less side effects. And so, you know, the future is tremendously promising.”
The report said breast radiation strategies are changing to deliver higher doses in a shorter period, both daily and across a course of treatment, with the aim of improving patient experience.
Planned Palm Beach County expansion
Shieh called the Palm Beach Gardens center “really just the tip of the iceberg.” Tampa General Mass General Brigham plans to expand its radiation and oncology services across Palm Beach County, he said.
