Apple released iOS 27 to the public on Monday, Sept. 14, introducing a suite of new features alongside the long-awaited Siri AI beta. The operating system brings meaningful upgrades across Photos, Safari, parental controls, and privacy tools, with performance improvements that Apple says can speed up app launches by up to 30 percent and photo loading by up to 70 percent.
The update supports iPhone 11 and newer models, as well as second-generation iPhone SE and later devices. However, the most advanced AI capabilities, including Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, require an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later. This hardware requirement means many iPhone owners can upgrade to iOS 27 but will miss out on the AI-powered features that Apple has emphasized most heavily.
Several of iOS 27’s standout tools solve everyday frustrations without requiring users to change their behavior. Safari’s new Notify Me feature can monitor a webpage for changes you care about, such as a product coming back in stock or a price drop. Instead of reopening the same page repeatedly, Safari alerts you when something changes. The feature supports hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly checks, though Apple notes that Notify Me does not yet work on every website.

AI-Powered Photo Editing and Image Creation
The Photos app receives significant AI upgrades in iOS 27. Spatial Reframing allows users to change a photo’s composition and perspective after taking it. Apple Intelligence can generate additional portions of a scene when the new framing exposes areas outside the original shot. The new Extend tool lets users expand beyond original edges while AI generates the missing surroundings.
Clean Up has also been upgraded to remove larger unwanted objects and distractions while using AI to fill in the space left behind. Image Playground receives a major overhaul, enabling users to generate images in many more styles, including photorealistic ones. Users can also start with an existing image and ask Apple Intelligence to change the setting or adjust the overall look without starting from scratch. Apple notes that intelligent photo-editing tools can be subject to daily usage limits.
Communication and Context During Calls
A new feature called Call Context surfaces useful information from other apps while users are on a call. For example, if you call an airline about a reservation, Call Context can pull up a confirmation code from Mail without requiring you to leave the Phone app and search for it. Apple says its system determines what could be useful based on who you are calling, and it does this without analyzing the audio from your call.

Enhanced Parental Controls and Find My Privacy
iOS 27 expands parental controls with Ask to Browse, a feature that lets children request access to restricted websites. Parents receive those requests through Messages and can approve or decline them. Apple has also expanded Communication Safety, which previously helped protect children from nudity in supported Apple services. With iOS 27, the system can now intervene when it detects gore or violent content in shared photos and videos.
Find My receives a privacy upgrade allowing users to set custom durations for location sharing or specify an exact date and time when sharing should stop. Users can also pause location sharing until the end of the day for specific people. This gives users more control over temporary location sharing without having to remember to turn it off manually.
Siri AI and Custom Shortcuts
Siri AI is rolling out as a beta in English on supported devices. It can hold more natural conversations and handle follow-up questions. Siri can use personal context from information on users’ devices, for example, finding an old photo without remembering when it was taken. It can also locate something buried in an email or note and take more actions inside apps including messages, emails, photos, and other supported applications.
iOS 27 introduces Describe a Shortcut, which lets users tell Apple Intelligence what they want their iPhone to automate in plain English. For example, you could ask your iPhone to message someone with your estimated time of arrival when you leave work. Shortcuts then connects the necessary actions to build the automation. This could make Shortcuts much more approachable for people who have found building them manually too complicated.
Interface Customization and Camera Controls
Apple improved the Liquid Glass interface design introduced last year by enhancing contrast and readability. Users now have greater control over how transparent the interface appears, with a slider that moves the look from ultraclear toward fully tinted. The setting applies across iOS, including Control Center, notifications, and app overlays.
The Camera app now lets users keep their most-used controls within easy reach above the camera frame. Apple starts users with Flash and Live Photo, but users can customize the row with other tools they use regularly. Available controls include Flash, Live Photo, Timer, Exposure, Styles, and Aspect. Users can also reset to defaults if needed.
iOS 27 should feel noticeably faster across the system. Apple reports that apps can launch up to 30 percent faster, new photos can load in the Photos app up to 70 percent faster, and AirDrop transfers can be up to 80 percent faster. The update also improves transitions between Wi-Fi and cellular connections and makes Mail search more relevant, though individual results will vary depending on the iPhone model and usage patterns.
Because Siri AI is launching as a beta, Apple is asking users to expect some rough edges while it continues to improve. The company recommends double-checking important answers or actions before relying on them fully.
